This seminar explores the experience(s) of Jews and Jewish communities during the modern era, with special emphasis on the momentous shift during the 20th century from Europe to the U.S. and Israel. What was once central – Europe – is now peripheral; what were once peripheral – the U.S. and Israel – are today central. It also explores American and Israeli Jewry as two independent centers in global Jewish life.
